Administrative Hub at Tempowerk

On the former site of the Vidal & Sohn Tempo factory—where three-wheeled motor vehicles were produced until operations ceased in 1978—a technology park has been established since 1985.
At Tempowerkring in Hamburg-Harburg, around 110 small and medium-sized technology-driven companies now develop, research, and work across an area of 30,000 square meters. At its center lies the administrative unit, the office responsible for all tenant-related matters.

As Managing Director of PLY atelier, Daniel Schöning oversaw the redesign of the Tempowerk’s 355 sqm headquarters. The goal was to create a work environment aligned with New Work principles while reflecting the unique role of the administrative unit as a hub for communication. The spatial concept deliberately plays with contrasts: open communication zones featuring lounges, a library table, and an eight-meter kitchen counter stand in dialogue with compact private offices. Floor-to-ceiling double doors allow these offices to be fully enclosed or opened up to the larger workspace. This creates a flexible interplay between retreat and interaction, accommodating a wide range of working styles.

“We placed great emphasis on authenticity in the choice of materials:
solid oak doors, rubber flooring, exposed concrete ceilings, and a kitchen counter made of brass and birch plywood give the space its distinctive character.”

Variations in ceiling heights, materials, and furnishings underscore the contrast between focused work and open communication. The result is an office that encourages agility, facilitates encounters, and still allows for privacy—offering a forward-looking model for work at Tempowerk.
