Schöning Studio – Where It All Began
This is where it all started.
In 2003, together with Sarah Schöning, I founded
SCHÖNING SPALT ARCHITEKTEN.
Our first job also gave us the chance to turn an unused space into our first office.
The old city villa, built in 1905, had a 2.5-meter-wide gap to the neighboring property, which had since been fully built up. We used this narrow space to establish our studio and start our independent practice.
Even today, our studio is located right here. The newly created third floor, with its dark façade and recessed glass front, intentionally contrasts with the historic building while respecting its character and proportions. The through-colored cement fiber panels of the addition extend into the façade of the connecting structure.
Seventeen years later, in 2020, the connecting building received a further extension: the original concrete structure from 2003 was complemented by a two-sided timber construction, adding additional space.
SCHÖNING STUDIO now enjoys a more generous office environment, reflecting both our growth and our continuous engagement with materiality and form.
